This course, designed for individuals operating and maintaining four-wheel drive vehicles, is essential for various industries, including mining, construction, emergency services, and environmental management. It is particularly relevant for those in supervisory and technical specialist roles who work under minimal supervision in varied work contexts.

Participants will learn to identify four-wheel drive specific terms, terminology, and techniques, plan for minimal environmental impact, perform pre-departure checks, use four-wheel drive mode, coordinate and recover a vehicle, and perform maintenance and minor repairs on four-wheel drive vehicles. The training ensures trainees are competent and confident in operating 4WD vehicles in field environments, using discretion and judgement in equipment selection and contingency measures.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours

  • Students are required to have LLN skills sufficient to enable them to complete access and understand organisational documentation including standard operating procedures, work requests, traffic plans and daily reports, write pre-travel plans and journey management plans, access and interpret site plans, read and write reports and permits and access and interpret weather information.
  • Students must be able to competently use communications systems, e.g. mobile and fixed line phone systems, 2-way radio communications systems and other similar communications systems.
  • A current driver’s licence for the relevant class of vehicle.

 

Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.


Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Performance Tasks - On two separate occasions:

  • Perform Pre-Operational Checks on a 4WD vehicle
  • Operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle

Documentation: Complete Vehicle Checklist

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Students must answer all questions.
